Training on the Outer Banks

I am back in training mode again and have had a productive training cycle in NC during vacation. I have went on two bike rides of 22 miles. My cardiovascular system is better than my body at withstanding the rides as my lower back tightened up during the rides. My weight is high but will work on.

Trail Running

Ran a little over three miles on bridle path near my home. It was muddy with many piles of horse crap littering the trail. Luckily, I avoided these benign land mines.

I wore my Garmin but have been unable to find chest strap for heart rate monitor since my move.

Lunch Workout

For my birthday, my wife bought me a membership at a gym close to where I work. Today, I took a spin class during lunch. The instructor was great and I was glad to get a workout in during the day.

I have been working killer hours and have been unable to workout either before or after work. I hope that midday workouts will help get rid of my "winter coat".

Lost in the Woods

I went for my first run in a long time. I live near a park called Forest Park. Forest Park has bridle trails, nature trails and an asphalt road that runs through it. I decided to do a trail run and wanted to run for about 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the trails are not very well marked and I got lost in the woods. I finally ran across a couple who was kind enough to direct me to the trails exit.

The good news is that I ran/walked for about 55 minutes and I don't feel sore today.

Shelter Island Memorial Day

Went to Shelter Island in New York for Memorial Day and was able to ride two days. Shelter Island is a wonderful place to bike as the island is mostly flat but also has some small hills to keep you honest. You have pleasant water breezes with trees protecting you from the heat.

I did two rides of approximately 8-10 miles. Not great mileage but I was having a romantic getaway with my wife and was riding with her. I broke away and did some sprint work.

One bummer, I bought a 2009 CRV and was unable to find a trunk mounted bike rack. I will devote my energies to locating one before the next trip.

Ciao.

Meat in Motion

Went on my first ride of the year today. I recently moved from Manhattan to Queens so I did not know what to expect during my first training ride. I know it is counter intuitive but it is probably easier to bike in Manhattan/NJ than it is in Queens.

I live by a large park, by NYC standards, and was able to ride for about an hour and 15 minutes. I was surprised by the hills I found during the ride but if the land was nice and flat, it would have been used for farms and than residential development.

While I was big and slow today, I was glad to get my "meat" in motion. I almost wimped out when it started to rain at the start of the ride but I hunkered on.

Back To Reality

After a hiatus from training, today is the day that I get back in shape. While I have let myself go with work and a recent move, I am prepared to do what it takes to get back in physical condition.

Last year I only did two multi-sport events. One was an swim/run and the other was the NYC Triathlon. My goal this year is to do at least one more multi-sport event.

The more I write the less I train. Wish me luck.
